A Queer History of the United States (ReVisioning American History), by Michael Bronski

Review

“Bronski does a stunning job of sweeping across five hundred years and weaving ‘queer’ through the history of this nation. Always insightful, and provocative.”—John D’Emilio, author of Lost Prophet“The first book to cover all of LGBT history from 1492 through the present is Michael Bronski's A Queer History of the United States (Beacon Press). It is wonderfully readable and looks at the way we understand the history of the United States. The LGBT population moves from the margins to the mainstream and we see that the history of this country also is our history.”—Windy City Times“Bronski's book provides an excellent overview for readers new to the field of gay history. Summing Up: Essential. All levels/libraries...”—CHOICE Magazine “...A succinct distillation of the history of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders in America… Bronski’s impeccable research bolsters his arguments… a useful handbook for LGBT activist groups and other interested members of the gay community.”—Boston Globe “In the age of Twitter and reductive history, we need a complex, fully realized, radical reassessment of history—and A Queer History of the United States is exactly that. Along the way, there are enough revelations and reassessments to fuel dozens of arguments about how we got to where we are today. I don’t know when I have enjoyed a history so much.”—Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina   “Bronski has that rare ability to comprehensively synthesize a large body of material without simplifying or distorting it, taking as much care with historical evidence as with the shifts in language necessary to accurately understand it.”—Martin Duberman, Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus, City University of New York   “This book is a revelation. Its lively and engaging narrative peels back layers of cultural interconnection—from the creation of corn flakes to curb masturbation to Bette Midler’s rise to stardom that started at a gay bathhouse—and much more. Bronski has a Zinn-like grasp of the ties that bind us all together and how to illuminate them on the page.”—Jewelle Gomez, activist and author of The Gilda Stories   “Bronski demonstrates with wit, insight, and impeccable scholarship that queer lives are, and always have been, woven into the very fabric of this country. Readable, radical, and smart—a must read.”—Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home   “Elegant, insightfully selective, and unremittingly intelligent, Bronski’s survey—of the whys and the ways queer people’s work and struggle have been integral in forming what we call ‘the United States of America’—is an impressive and useful overview."—Samuel R. Delany, author of Times Square Red, Times Square Blue   “A savvy political, legal, literary (and even fashion) history, Bronski’s narrative is as intellectually rigorous as it is entertaining.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review “Bronski does a stunning job of sweeping across five hundred years and weaving ‘queer’ through the history of this nation. Always insightful, and provocative.”—John D’Emilio, author of Lost Prophet“[A] monumental achievement.”—The Bay Area Reporter

Rarely have I read a book that makes me think so much. I have to read it with a highlighter and wish I had a photographic memory to retain it all. This book defies being read quickly. Like for "A People's History of the United States," this book makes me look back at history but through a different lens. Although I bought the book to look at Queer history, I didn't realize this books is really a history of sexual, gender differences, and "othering." Perhaps that's what queer history is, but I'm more familiar with gay history and have not encountered this wider view of all non heteronormative behavior before. While I thought it would be like other history books, recounting dates and facts, this book is far better in that it attempts to give the reasons behind the history. It forces you think bigger. I have a degree in Religious Studies, an interest in spirituality and social commentary. I found the information on Transcendentalism and the development of an American ethos very interesting. This is a book that I will reread many times. If I'm gushing it's because I haven't read a lot of gay/queer history so I don't have enough experience with it to compare it with other texts, as other reviewers here might.

Since I have been alive and living in the United States during the covered period covered in "A Queer History in the United States" and been involved in the Queer community, I am aware of most of the historical period covered. I found the book interesting but covered very little that wasn't already known. Far better reading and little known facts are better covered in Lillian Faderman's book, "The Gay Revolution" which is also available on Amazon.com.

A great cultural history of the United States. Author carries us through all the signposts that point the way to who we are today. This book has won awards in the gay press, of course. But it should be winning accolades in the mainstream media too. And by the way ... high school teachers, please take a look at this. It could be what your students are looking for in order to understand the complex modern world they will soon be joining as adults.

This is far from a concise history of Queer United States history. While I enjoyed the book, the author did tend to jump around chronologically, which makes it a bit hard to stay focused on the time periods he was trying to portray. Other than that, the book is interesting and reads easily, doesn't get too bogged down in the mundane. If you are looking for a quick run through of some major points (as well as some not too well known ones) in US Queer history, this is the book for you. If you are looking for some in-depth analysis of our history, look elsewhere!

I found it good because I was ignorant of homosexual history in our country. I would recommend this book as a group study book or a college class text (or supplemental reading).

I bought this gift for my daughter for Christmas. When she unwrapped it, she actually cried. Glad I bought this!

Bronski writes well and includes a wealth of information. An excellent reference and an interesting read.

As a scholarly work it needed a few more examples of early Americans. Perhaps speculation at best, but never the less, when referring to the early arrivals in America, one can only suspect at best on their private lives of whatever kind.
