Jordan Denari Duffner is a leading Catholic voice on Muslim-Christian relations and an advocate for interreligious dialogue. Currently pursuing a PhD in Theological and Religious Studies at Georgetown University, she is also an associate at the Bridge Initiative, where she previously worked as a research fellow studying anti-Muslim prejudice. Her writing on Islam and Catholicism has appeared in TIME, The Washington Post, America, and numerous other outlets. A former Fulbright researcher in Amman, Jordan, she lives in the Washington, DC, area with her husband, Chris.

The best part of this book for me was the witness to and strong encouragement to get to know Muslims and enter a dialogue of life. The author wrote much about her contacts with Muslims in the U.S. and abroad. These personal accounts were very helpful. Personal contacts make a great deal of difference, and give us a chance to clarify what we read and hear about Islam and Muslims. I've read a fair amount about Islam in the past several years and have had some personal contacts at my parish and at a local Islamic center. I have come to the conclusion that personal contacts are very helpful in getting to the heart of matters.I am left with some questions about the theological interpretations in the book about what Muslims believe. (That is largely why I gave the book four stars, rather than five.) I'm attempting to talk with a local Imam I've met at an interfaith discussion at our parish and at an Iftar this year during Ramadan about these questions. He is very articulate and loves these discussions so I am looking forward to that. If it happens, I will revisit this review and write about the outcome.7/4/18: I met with the Iman today for coffee and gave him my copy of the book to read. We plan on getting together again to discuss his thoughts on the book. Our hope is to have an interfaith discussion at our Catholic parish this fall with some Muslims from the local Islamic Center and Catholics from our parish.7/23/18: I met again with the Imam to discuss his thoughts on the book. He has several concerns about the interpretations offered in the book. Nevertheless, we may use this book for a parish-level Catholic-Muslim Discussion as even these concerns are a good starting point for discussion.The book has discussion questions at the end, a glossary, and suggestions for further reading. This is all very helpful for those who want to continue studying this topic.

Fantastic! This is an extremely insightful, scholarly, and personal book about Muslim-Christian relations that I recommend to anyone interested in the topic. The topic is timely and deeply explored, though the book is never dense and moves along at a very crisp, enjoyable pace. I couldn't put the book down. Denari Duffner shares the perfect mix of her personal experiences and scholarly insight from sources like Islamic mystics and papal encyclicals, and has written a real gem. You will enjoy this book, and learn a great deal, too.

I must say Jordan's first book on this important relationship between us all is enormously important. It has helped me to articulate my own relationship with Muslim friends and how we all enhance our own faiths. In the kind of divisive world we live in, this is a practical tool to assist Christians and Muslims in our search together for common ground, a respect for our differences, and ways we can flourish together. What an important search in the times we live.

This book is a wonderful candid look at the power of religious pluralism at it’s finest! Demario Duffner shows that interfaith relationships actually strengthen ones own personal religious convictions, not weakening them. A wonderful narrative which dismantles the core misconceptions that the Islamophobic industry has built their lies on.

I bought this book with the intention of better understanding the Muslim faith and, although I’m not Catholic, to learn what similarities exist between the two religions. But it surprised me by revealing many unanswered questions about my own faith. This book has helped me define my own Christian beliefs.

Jordan Denari Duffner has put together an accessible and inspiring book that combines her own story of growing in her own Catholic faith though encounters with Muslims and careful engagement with both the Islamic tradition and the Catholic faith (particularly the doctrine arising from Vatican II). While she doesn’t get too deep into theological nuance, she does lay out enough of a foundation for Catholics to begin conversations with their Muslim neighbors. What strikes me as most distinctively Catholic about her approach is her spiritual and intellectual courage. The Catholic tradition holds that truth cannot contradict truth and therefore Catholics need never fear learning about the beliefs of others nor about their practices. To learn about others—to get to know our neighbors for who they are and what they believe—is a necessary step of faith and love through which we might begin to counteract the fear, suspicion, and hatred that drive far too many of our words and actions. Excellent work.
