For many years Alfred Sheinwold's FIVE WEEKS TO WINNING BRIDGE was the ultimate one-volume bridge book, that would take a rookie to near-intermediate status. Because bidding conventions have evolved, FIVE WEEKS is no longer the reference standard, but this one comes close. Eddie Kanter can take a rank novice and teach bridge wisely and well. His bidding approach is a more modern, aggressive style (you bridge players will know that he advocates "five-card majors" and opening a hand with as few as 12 points, even 11 with a great suit) -- that works for me, too. I enjoy this book. Now there's a newer one, also by Eddie Kanter, but this volume can be had quite cheaply used.

First of all, "Dummies" don't try to learn how to play Bridge! Don't look down your nose at this book. I am a beginner Bridge player. I took one 6-session course at a Senior Center, and was left pretty confused. This is one of the easiest to use Bridge books I have experienced. I like that it starts out explaining the Play before explaining the bidding. Most books do the opposite. I go back to it often, as I advance in experience. A very good reference book...a better choice for beginners than one of the many books written by other bridge experts. If you are serious about learning how to play bridge, buy this book, and take it slowly chapter by chapter, laying out the cards as shown in the diagrams.

Bridge can be a hard game to learn, and the lessons can be painfully learned, and one asks, what the heck am I putting myself through this for? Eddie Kantar makes it fun and funny. I totally laugh out loud at certain parts. He explains the difference between counting winners and losers (very different process, and nobody explains it better than he does). Chapter headings like, "Subtracting your way to stardom," or repeating the principle, "When attacking an unequally divided suit, play the high equal honors from the short side first." Just to show you what might happen if you forget that rule, he plays out the hand, first warning the reader to clear the children out of the room, this isn't going to be pretty. The text is peppered with humor and makes learning the game as fun (maybe more?) as the game is. I am so indebted to this book for instilling the right attitude in me. Thanks Eddie Kantar!

Great book for beginners! It is clear, concise and full of humor, making it fun to read, as well as easy to comprehend. It is very well organized and progresses logically from the basics to all you need to know. The rules and conventions included are The Standard American System (new since the Goren days) and are consistent with American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) standards. In this system, distribution points are counted only after partners have agreed on a suit, which is fully explained in the book. I bought the first edition of Eddie Kantar's "Dummies" book when I retired 9 years ago and took up bridge again after a 25-year break, needing a refresher course and upgrade from the Goren years to modern bridge. As an intermediate player, I value it as a reference in case of forgetfulness... This 2nd edition has improved diagrams and other updated information. Highly recommended for beginners and beyond . . . Another excellent book by this author: "Eddie Kantar Teaches Topics in Declarer Play at Bridge."

This book provides easy to follow instructions on the fine art of playing bridge. I had a limited knowledge of the game and found this tutorial exceptionally easy to understand. It will continue to be a good reference for all time.

I am also new to bridge, and have also tried several other books on the subject. The three that I tried previously started with covering hand evaluation and bidding. By the time I get to the sections on "Responding to Responses at No Trump", I was getting lost. Kanter's approach is just the opposite. He teaches the mechanics of playing the hand first, THEN teaches how to evaluate the hand and bid. This is a great approach because once you learn how the play should be done, you are in a much better position to understand WHY you should evaluate and bid the way a hand demands you should. I've only studied the first 65 pages or so, but can already see a dramatic improvement in my bidding and my play. I can't wait to continue to study this great book.Overall, a terrific approach to teaching this great game. I can't wait to read some of Kanter's other books as well.Addendum: I continue to read and carefully study the chapters on play which preceed the chapters on bidding. There is lots of great material here. Don't let the "For Dummies" title fool you. This is a great book by a great teacher.Addendum 2: Here I am 6 months after buying this book, and am I glad I did. I'm playing online regularly, and am gearing up for my first NABC in July! I'm still a novice, and there is a tremendous amount of learning and practice ahead, but this book has been a tremendous first step. I think that of all the beginner books that I've read on ANY subject, this has been the best in terms of preparing me for the next level.

I already knew the basics of the rules of Bridge and purchased this book to have a better foundational understanding of the game. I have been very happy with my purchase, for several reasons:--It was a good price--It is well organized into various topics--It is fun to read; the author is humorous and has an engaging style--There are examples given for each topic--There is helpful information given in the later chapters about more resourcesThis book gave me the confidence to teach two friends how to play Bridge, especially by being able to give a high-level overview of bidding; I printed off the online resource and kept the book handy when we played. I highly recommend the book (and the game!).

Great for beginning Bridge players. Some of it is a little basic if you have played other card games that take tricks and use trump. It does a nice job teaching beginning bidding.
