Reviewed in 2006sep CHOICE. Here is a coffee-table quarto-sized work that goes well beyond the insipid into the world of the useful. The book is a photographic survey of most, if not all, of the major petrified wood deposits known to collectors worldwide. Chapter 1 presents visual keys for the identification of polished slabs of petrified wood. A discussion on petrifaction of wood, which is not available in such an accessible form in the primary scientific literature, is a valuable addition to the taphonomy of fossil plants. Browsing through the numerous superb illustrations gives the same feeling as sifting through the dusty drawers of one of the world's great museums. There is a schism in the paleontology world between "amateurs/collectors" and the "academics/professionals." Though this volume appears to fall on the collector's side, there is enough crossover to make its purchase a worthwhile addition to the academician's library. Personally, this reviewer is jealous of the collectors who have the time and resources to produce such a fine work, but it is difficult not to recommend this tome as a tribute to the wonderful world of fossil plants--it is way underpriced. All I can do is piggy-back on all the other five star ratings this gorgeous book received. This has to be the DEFINITIVE work on the subject. I have always been fascinated by the petrified wood slabs and bookends I've seen in lapidary shops or gem shows but I had no idea the breadth of colors, patterns or designs that existed. Words really fail in trying to describe the stunningly beautiful examples presented in this volume. Many of these specimens look more like agate or geodes then what one typically expects petrified wood (fossil wood) to look like. It really is intriguing to see how the different geographical regions produced such unique varieties. The above observations may seem a given to the seasoned collector but to a novice, like myself, this book opens up a whole new world. Considering the reviews already posted this addition may seem rather superfluous, but I couldn't let the opportunity pass to express what a treasure this work truly is. I buy a lot of books (too many, probably) and few match the standards and value this book offers. "Ancient Forests" is not an inexpensive book but the price asked represents but a fraction of its real worth.

This is an absolutely superb book for anyone with an interest in fossilized wood. There are many excellent photos of specimens from around the world. The information and photos are a great help in wood identification for the collector. I am excited to have this book in my collection!

Excellent packaging. Beautiful Photos. Great descriptions.

American Forests and his earlier book Petrified Wood are amazingly beautiful books. I have seen a few of the petrified wood samples in museums which are shown in these books, and the photoimages correspond to the authentic samples. I have two other petrified wood photo books that I have loaned out but I don't remember their titles (mostly chapters by German authors). Daniels two books are the very best. Howard McPherson

A definitive work on the phenomenon of petrified wood. Ancient Forrests focuses on the science of petrified wood. It has an amazing wealth of photographs. Many focus on the grain patterns and the amazing detail that can be found in the many different species of petrified wood. There are also many whole specimens and overviews of famous wood collections such as the Murphy collection at the Rice Museum in Portland Oregon. If you are at all interested in Petrified wood, this is a must-have book, Beautiful!

I like it. Excellent addition to the petrified wood book library.
